Community Stories
Every community has a story to share. Whether it be about the process that unfolded, the partnerships that developed or the successes or lessons learned overall, communities are richer through sharing their stories. BCHC works with communities to share their stories with the intention to enhance community to community learning, regional learning and provincial learning. Stories are either written by communities themselves or their regional facilitator.
We also work with communities to develop digital stories that can be used for multiple purposes. Community stories include a wide range of initiatives from developing a healthy communities committee to hosting a regional dialogue to inter-generational cultural cooking classes.
Story of the Month
Sooke Community Health Initiative (CHI)
| The Sooke Community Health Initiative (CHI) on Vancouver Island, BC is a growing partnership of interested community members and health & social service providers that have been working together since 2003 to advocate for local health and social services that will maintain and improve quality of life in the region. In 2007 CHI worked with the Regional Facilitator using the BCHC Integral Capacity Building Framework to plan and deliver 2 forums with the aim to build relationships in the community and inquire more deeply into what the community health data meant for youth and first nations health. The result of using this process was deeper engagement of community stakeholders, increased communication, and the identification of agreed upon priorities for collaboration and action. |

“We now have a comprehensive set of recommendations to inform our next steps. We have built better working relationships by demonstrating that there is real interest in their ideas and concerns, and many community members are interested in working with them to address their concerns and help make their ideas become reality. “ Coordinator of Sooke CHI |
