Our Approach
A common theme amongst those who are in the business of community building is that this work is busy, unpredictable, and complex. While we can look to best practices for guidance, each community has unique needs, assets and potentials. In other words, there is no recipe for building healthy communities. However, evidence shows that whether you are creating healthy food systems or working on a local housing strategy, taking the time to articulate and develop an intentional approach for building community capacity results in greater potential for healthy change and development.
The Healthy Communities Approach focuses on critical aspects for capacity building to build stronger, more resilient communities, regardless of the issue you may be working on. The “Healthy Communities Approach” addresses:
WHAT:
- Multiple and Interconnected Determinants of Health: the social, environmental, economic, physical, psychological, spiritual and cultural factors that influence our individual and community health and well-being.
- Four Essential Building Blocks: community involvement, inter-sectoral partnerships, political commitment and healthy public policy; and
- Healthy human development as a core attribute of a healthy community.
HOW:
Integral Capacity Building: a comprehensive and integrated process of:
- Community learning
- Community engagement
- Expanding community assets
- Community collaboration
