Community Learning Learning lies at the very core of human potential. It fosters our ability to think, create and solve problems. It enables us to envision and embrace the kind of lives we want for our children and ourselves. Beginning in early childhood and continuing throughout the adult years, learning is fundamental to our experience of being human and shapes virtually every aspect of our lives. And a little more detail:
We like the way that the Smithers-based community development organization, the Storyteller’s Foundation, describes community learning: "the learning that takes place in natural arenas: family, clubs, peer groups, workplace, neighbourhoods…" They describe how bringing a learning lens to community development work allows community practitioners to reflect on their experiences and create knowledge from action. They have also found that learning in community results in a heightened intent of purpose; a greater sense of being part of a movement for change; and clearer articulation of what really happens within a community development environment.
As part of BCHC’s capacity building approach we support organizations and communities to:
- Learn about ourselves: our strengths, skills, assets, assumptions, perspectives, values, etc.
- Learn about each other: the ways we make meaning together, cultural norms, shared aspirations, the ways we work with each other to achieve common goals, etc.
- Learn about the issues we face: the statistics, policies, trends, systemic influences, etc.
