BCHC Events

"I have thoroughly enjoyed and found the BC Healthy Community Forums that I have attended to be amazing venues for networking, brainstorming and develping partnerships.“
- Community Outreach Worker

Learning in a community setting often happens informally as we work alongside others to influence change. We learn to apply the best solutions locally by thinking together, inquiring together and taking action together. In this sense, learning helps us to reflect on our actions and become more intentional about why we do what we do.

BCHC sees learning as a critical part of how BC communities can share experience and knowledge with each other. Learning also helps us to identify common themes of interest and inquiry amongst communities and different sectors. There are number of ways BCHC aims to support opportunities for ongoing learning:

Regional Learning Events:

BCHC convenes regional workshops that provide opportunities for training, skill development, dialogue and networking around shared topics of interest. These events are designed to be highly engaging, creating opportunities to stretch our thinking and our practice while providing practical tools to apply in day to day work on the ground.

Provincial Conference:

A provincial conference was held in June 2008 in Vancouver, BC that brought together community developers, health promotion practitioners, local government leaders, policy makers and engaged citizens for two days of dynamic workshops, networking, dialogue and deliberation.

Regional Forums:

Regional forums have been held in the Interior, Fraser Valley, Vancouver Coastal, Northern BC and Vancouver Island from 2006 – 2009. Forums are an opportunity for communities to share stories, promising practices and emerging ideas in a regional context. Forums have often been co-hosted with a local community organization and draw community leaders from across the region.

Communities of Practice:

Communities of practice are groups of people who share a concern or a passion for something they do and learn how to do it better as they interact regularly.[1] BCHC supports the development and facilitation of communities of practice around themes that are important to community development and community building. Communities of practice have emerged regionally and sub-regionally across BC.
